One Year after Devastating Joplin Tornado, Dominium Celebrates Re-Opening of Affordable Housing Complex
May 30, 2012 - Last May an EF5 tornado devastated the greater Joplin area, causing an estimated $2.2 billion in damages and displacing thousands of Joplin residents from their storm-damaged homes and apartment buildings.
One year later, Dominium, a leading apartment development and management company, is proud to invite the community to celebrate the grand opening of 1502 Michigan Place.
The event, which takes place on Friday, June 1 beginning at 12:30 p.m., will signify the completion of a significant overhaul of the storm-damaged property and the restoration of these units to the market. The Lieutenant Governor of Missouri, Peter Kinder, and Joplin’s mayor, Melodee Colbert-Kean, will both speak at the event.
After being heavily damaged in the tornado, the 138 unit affordable housing complex has undergone major renovations to both the interior and exterior, including a complete overhaul of the interiors, new appliances, new mechanical systems, complete bathroom remodeling, landscaping and a new clubhouse. In total, more than $10 million in improvements were made to the property to improve aesthetics and quality of life for residents.
“Joplin has an extremely low rental vacancy rate due to the amount of housing that was lost to the tornado, and the local market desperately needs additional affordable housing to meet demand,” said Armand Brachman, co-managing partner of Dominium. “With the grand opening of 1502 Michigan Place we are proud to offer additional affordable housing units to meet the needs of the people of Joplin as the city continues to rebuild.”
The grand opening celebration is a community event for Joplin residents, public officials and media to see the renovated property and meet with Dominium leaders.
