Dominium’s A-Mill Artist Lofts Receives LEED Gold Certification
An artist-occupied affordable housing development is awarded for sustainability
Dominium announced today that it A-Mill Artist Lofts, an artist-occupied affordable housing development, received LEED Gold certification by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC).
The building’s LEED score card includes 19/19 points for optimizing energy efficiency and 7/7 points for renewable energy. A-Mill Artist Lofts’ efficiency comes in part from a hydroelectric turbine powered from the Mississippi River, which provides 75 percent of the building’s electricity. The site runs 100 percent of captured rainwater through a storm-water management system that uses roof water for irrigation. The building also includes an innovative hydrothermal heating and cooling system also utilizing the Mississippi River water.
Dominium renovated A-Mill Artist Lofts in 2015 to transform the then-vacant National Historic Landmark into affordable live/work artist lofts. The building includes 251 affordable artist apartments along with studio space, performance spaces and outdoor amenities. Dominium focused on energy efficiency and sustainability to upgrade the historic buildings.
“Sustainability is part of our vision,” said Dominium development associate Neal Route, “We are honored to receive Gold LEED certification at A-Mill Artist Lofts and will continue to look for innovative ways to incorporate energy efficiency, renewable energy, and sustainability in all of our projects.”
Dominium’s renovation of A-Mill Artist Lofts equipped a historic building with modern amenities and sustainability advances. Even the historic “Pillsbury’s Best Flour” sign, now lit with LED bulbs, showcases the extent to which Dominium preserved the history of the building while making significant efficiency upgrades and earning the LEED Gold certification.
