Groundbreaking celebration planned for new 148-unit affordable housing development in Minneapolis suburb

Dominium announced today that it will begin construction on Grand Central Flats, a 148-unit affordable housing development in Columbia Heights, Minnesota.

Dominium begins construction of the affordable housing community on the former Kmart site in December. Grand Central Flats will consist of a clubhouse with a local art exhibit at the entrance and will be equipped with a community room, bike storage, and fitness center. The community will offer one, two or three-bedroom apartment homes and include amenities such as high-quality countertops and appliances, in-unit laundry and large floor plans. Most apartment homes will have a private balcony or large living room window.

“Dominium has been seeking opportunities to develop much needed affordable housing catered to working families and individuals in the Twin Cities Metro area,” said Owen Metz, vice president and project partner. “The City of Columbia Heights is a strong suburb that is expected to grow rapidly in the coming years. With the low supply of high-quality affordable housing for families, this development will bring 148 units of much-needed affordable housing to the area.”

Grand Central Flats will have two outdoor community spaces, one at each building, which will have grills and seating for residential use. The property will have both underground and surface parking. Additionally, there will be both an indoor and outdoor child play area and a dog park that will showcase beautiful landscaping throughout the site.  Strong pedestrian connections will be established to connect the transit friendly site to high frequency bus transit on Central Ave just one-block away.

Renovations are expected to be completed in the fall of 2019.
